Going Out
Watercolour on BFK Rivers printmaking paper
21 x 21 cm (8.27 x 8.27 in)
This painting is based on a family photograph of my grandmother and my grandfather standing beside their truck and home.
What drew me to the image was the contrast in their posture. He stands slightly apart, distant and reserved. She stands firmly, practical and composed, as though accustomed to the work and demands of the life around her.
They share the same frame, the same truck, the same house.
The photograph records the moment. The painting lingers on the distance between them.
Note: Material
Painted on BFK Rives printmaking paper.
Originally designed for etching and lithography, the cotton rag sheet absorbs water and pigment deeply into its fibres. This allows washes to settle into the paper rather than sitting on the surface, producing softer edges and a more integrated image.
It’s also great to draw on.
